Is there anything more enjoyable than sitting around a fire with friends?

According to anthropologists, fire played a significant part in our evolutionary history and was probably central to the socialization of the human species.

Moreover, Christopher Lynn has discovered that campfires lower blood pressure.

So this is official. Campfires are good for you!

Unfortunately, campfires can be a messy affair. Thankfully, we now have more civilized ways to enjoy sitting around a fire pit. Some of the modern outdoor fire pits will give you a smokeless and hassle free experience. At the push of a button.

Isn’t progress a great thing?

A fire pit is the easiest way to add style and atmosphere to your patio but choosing the right one can be difficult.

In this article, we are going to review the 4 best backyard fire pits that will spice up your backyard instantly.

What Fire Pit Should You Buy?

Your choice will depend on your own needs and preferences as well as your budget.

Here are the things you should consider before buying :

Budget

A fire pit can cost between $100 and $400 depending on its size, the materials used and whether it offers smokeless technology or not.

If you just want to make the occasional fire in your yard, you can get a simple metal fire bowl for around $100.

On the other hand, if you are an outdoor enthusiast, you might want to consider spending a bit more to benefit from some extra features, like smokeless technology, portability or design.

Local regulations

First of all, you need to check with your local authorities for regulations related to outdoor fire pit placement or restrictions for burning wood.

You also need to ask your landlord or homeowners association if that applies to you.

Permanent or Portable

Next, you need to decide if you want a permanent fixture or a portable one.

A portable fire pit will give you more flexibility, ease of use and can be moved around as needed.

This review includes only portable options.

Extra-large fire pits (over 4 feet in diameter) may require a permit or have other safety or installation requirements. You need to check your city building codes and local authorities before getting started.

If you choose a permanent one, you need to plan carefully its location and the seating arrangement.

Safety

You need to find a safe spot for your fire pit.

The ground should be level and the floor should be made of nonflammable material, like concrete, flagstone, gravels or earth.

If you have a wood deck, make sure to buy a protective pad.

Your fire pit should be at least 10 feet away from any building or fence and in an open area without overhanging trees.

For wood-burning fire pits, it’s always a good idea to have a spark screen.

Fuel Type

The three options are wood, propane or natural gas.

A wood fire pit offers a more authentic experience and better savor if you want to use it for cooking.

But they are increasingly regulated due to environmental concerns about air-polluting smoke and fire hazard.

Propane and natural gas are smoke-free and easier to use. You just need to turn on a button.

A modern fire pit with smokeless technology is the best of both worlds.

Is a Fire Pit worth the price ?

It depends on your own situation and priorities, but generally speaking, the answer would be yes.

Not only you will add instant atmosphere to your backyard, but you will also be able to use it longer.

And if you choose an ultra-portable one, you can also take it on your outdoor adventures.

How long do Fire Pits last?

That would depend on the type and your personal use.

permanent stone fire pit will probably last a lifetime.

The Solo Stove is said to last a lifetime if well maintained and gas fire pit will last many years.

Make sure you buy a cover or store it in a cool and dry location when not in use.

Now that you know what type of fire pit you want, let’s move on to the reviews.

OUR TOP PICK

Solo Stove Bonfire 2.0

PROS

CONS

Our first selection is the Solo Stove Bonfire

It’s a modern stainless steel fire pit which is slowly revolutionizing campfire.

Although it looks very plain on the outside, it hides a unique airflow system on the inside.

Not only the Solo Stove gives almost no smoke, but it also burns the firewood logs more efficiently.

That means you will need less wood than a traditional fire pit.

The Solo Stove Bonfire is lightweight and can be carried easily anywhere you wish. It comes with a carry case. It’s the ultimate portable fire pit.

It’s effortless to use, and the minimalist design means it will fit in any kind of yard.

The new 2.0 version features a removable base plate and ash pan for easy cleaning.

The price is about $350, so it’s a bit of an investment. If you keep in mind that this product is built to last, will save you money on firewood and comes with the carry case, you’ll see that the price is entirely justified.

We think the Solo Stove is the future of fire pits and is a great option if you want to take your campfire to the next level!

OUR TOP PICK

Solo Stove Bonfire 2.0

BALI OUTDOORS Gas Fire Pit Table

The BALI OUTDOORS Gas Fire Pit Table is a good choice if you want to add a beautiful atmosphere to your backyard at a good price.

We love that it’s small (28 x 28 x 25 inches) so it can fit perfectly in any outdoor space.

It has a 50,000 BTU propane burner but doesn’t provide that much heat. If heat is what you’re after, this isn’t the product for you.

The table has enough Space for a 20 lb Tank (20 lb LP not included) and for some storage.

It comes with a lid, which means you can also use it as a coffee table when not in use.

Note that the ignition button is reported not to work very well. As it can be ignited with a lighter easily, it’s not really a deal breaker.

The assembly is not as straightforward as advertised, so be aware that you will  need about 1 hour.

The main downside is that it rusts quickly, so you’ll need to buy a protective cover which is sold separately for $28.99.

All in all, a great decorative and eco-friendly alternative to a wood-fire pit.

INNO STAGE Smokeless Fire Pit

The Inno Stage is another modern fire pit with patented smokeless technology.

It comes in three sizes. The large one is 20.75 x 20.75 x 18 inches and weighs 33.9 pounds, it can accommodate up to 6 people. The medium size one is 12.5 x 15 x 7 inches and weighs 16.76 pounds, it’s best for less than 3 people. The small one is 12.2 x 12.2 x 8.7 inches and weighs 8.45 pounds. It’s suitable for 1 or 2 people.

You can also choose two different finishes. Black painted iron or stainless steel.

The medium and the small size comes with a carrying bag if you want to take it camping.

Its main advantage is that it’s much cheaper than the Solo Stove.

According to the review, it’s not as smokeless as advertised. If you need to reload it with wood pellets, it will produce quite a lot of smoke.

It also consumes quite a lot of pellets.

Another downside is that it rusts very easily and can’t be left outside.

It’s a good choice if you want a portable, smokeless wood-fire pit and don’t want to spend too much money.

If you can afford a bit more, we would recommend the Solo Stove.

INNOSTAGE

Fire Sense Roman Fire Pit

Our last choice is a simple metal fire bowl for those who want to spend less than $80.

If you just need an occasional fire in your backyard, it doesn’t make sense to invest in a sophisticated fire pit.

We like the Fire Sense Roman Fire Pit because it looks very stylish for the price.

With a small size (35 x 35 x 20 inches) and a weight of only 15 Pounds, it can be moved around easily as needed or stored in the shed when not in use.

Be aware that it’s NOT a heavy-duty fire pit and will not last forever. If you have a heavy use of your fire pit, this is not the one for you.

Also it rusts easily so buying a cover could extend its life. It only costs $15 and is worth the investment, unless you plan to store it inside when not in use.

It needs assembly but that is very easy to do.

Nothing fancy here. Just a straightforward fire bowl that will add a nice touch to your backyard at a very reasonable price.

Final Thoughts

There are a lot of fire pits out there and choosing only four was not easy.

We tried our best to provide options that will fit into most people’s requirements and budget, and we hope you’ll find what you were looking for.

The prices start at $80 all the way to $300, so you can find one that fits your budget. Fire pits don’t have to be expensive.

You will have to take into consideration the size of your patio and to decide whether you prefer a gas or a wood-fueled fire pit.

A firewood pit will give you a more authentic experience but comes with some hassle. A gas fire pit will provide you with a smokeless and hassle-free experience, which, in this time and age, is the favorite option for most people.

Whichever option you choose, your fire pit will be highly appreciated by your guests. And of course, you will be able to use your patio longer, long after the end of summer.

And who doesn’t want to do that?
